Ten thousand people attended the Centenary Gaines at the Melbourne Cricket Ground to-day, when the greatest collection of athletic talent in Australia, New Zealand, England, and Finland competed in a series oi thrilling championship events. The weather was ideal, and the track last. Results were as follow: — 100 Yards. Hampson (Australia) 1 Macfarlane (New Zealand) 2 Yates (Australia) •••• 3 Won by inches. Time, 9.9-10. 440 Yards. Eismanu (Australia) 1 Francis (Australia) - Moffatt (Australia) 3 Won by two yards, the same distance being between second and thiftl. Mile. Backhouse (Australia) 1 McLachlan (New Zealand) Matthews (New Zealand) 3 Won by two feet, with 20 yards between second and third. Time, 4,18 1-10. Backhouse took an early lead with Matthews and McLachlan in close pursuit. In the run home McLachlan and Backhouse raced neck and neck, Backhouse just, getting there by a great effort. 120 Yards Hurdles.
