WEST INDIES LEAD

Home Side’s Valuable First Innings

STRONG BOWLING ATTACK

(Received January 27, 11.45 p.m.) Port of Spain, January 26. A record attendance of 12,000 was present at the resumption of the second Test match between M.C.C. and the West Indies. Nothing ’can account for the English collapse except inability to play the bowling of Constantine, Ilylton and Martindale, backed up by R. Grant’s fielding at square-leg, where he brought off three magnificent catches. The score at lunch was five wickets for 32 runs. Later Hendren and Iddon were together in a partnership realising 71 runs, then Iddou and Holmes added 74. Iddon batted for 170 minutes and pulled England out of a dangerous position. The English tail-enders defended stubbornly. Grant finally called on Sealey, who had Farrimond caught first ball, and soon after dismissed Paine. The ninth wicket added 62. Holmes batted 210 minutes. The West Indies began their second innings slowly, even Headley being subdued. Detailed scores are as follow: — WEST INDIES.—First Innings. Christian), c. Farrimond, b. Smith .... It Jones, c.
