SCHOOL VACATION

The Duke’s Extra Day

Following the suggestion of his Royal Highness, the Duke of Gloucester, that an additional day’s holiday should be granted to primary and secondary school pupils in New Zealand, the Minister of Education, Hon. S. G. Smith, has directed it to be observed by the public and Native primary, intermediate and district high schools on Monday, February 4, the day on which pupils were to have ended the present midsummer vacation. The secondary, combined, and technical high schools will open one day later than the date decided upon by their respective boards. Concerning the Raster holidays, the Minister has suggested to all education boards that, as Anzac Day falls this year within Easter Week, they shoilld grant April 24 and 26 as special holidays. If necessary, he has stated, holidays which the school committees might grant could be reduced accordingly. The Wellington Education Board has approved of the proposals and its schools will be closed accordingly.
