MILITARY VISITOR
Lieut.-General Pitt-Taylor Lieutenant-General Walter William Pitt-Taylor, C. 8., U.M.G., D. 5.0., late of the Rifle Brigade, and Airs. PittTaylor, passed through Wellington during the week-end. They have toured the North Island, and will now visit the South Island, for which the Automobile Association (Wellington) has mapped out a tour. Lieutenant-General Pitt-Taylor, who was born in August, 1878, is the son of the late Air. Charles Pitt-Taylor, and his- wife is a daughter of the late Rt. Hon. Sir James Stronge, fifth baronet. General Pitt-Taylor was educated at Eton. He entered the Army in 1897, gained his captaincy in 1905, and his majority during the Great War (in 1916). He served throughout the South African campaign, gaining both the Queen’s and King’s Aledals, with six clasps, and earning the D.S.O. In the European War he was mentioned nine times in dispatches, became successively brevet-major, lieutenant-colonel and colonel, gained the C.AI.G. and C. 8., was created an officer of the Legion of Honour, and won the Croix de Guerre and silver medal for valour and the Croix de Guerre, Italy. He commanded the 17th Indian Infantry Brigade from 1923 to 1925, when he took over the command of the sth Infantry Brigade at Aidershot, a command he retained until 1928. During the following year he was appointed Director of Recruiting and Organisation at the War Office, a post retained until 1932, when he was given command of the 3rd Division. On his return to England, he will become Lieutenant, of the Tower of London (as from Alarch 1).
