Mangaweka Values At the Mangaweka sale last Thursday Dalgety and Company, Limited, offered a good yarding of lambs. Competition was very strong right through the sale, and there was a complete clearance. Some splendid lines of lambs were auctioned, and these were eagerly brought up for fattening. The buying power mainly eame from further north, where there has been more rain and feed is more plentiful. Prices were: —Best b.f. shorn lambs, up to 16/6; medium, 14/- to 15/-; smaller sorts, down to 10/-; best w.f. wether lambs, up to 17/-; medium, 14/to 16/-; backward sorts, down to 9/6. A few lines of woolly lambs sold from 12/8 to 14/-. No breeding ewes were offered. 40 15-month P.A. steers, £3/5/-; 20 2year P.A.’steers, £4; 45 2-year P.A. heifers, £2/17/6. Raetihi Sale At the Raetihi sale on Thursday Freeman R. Jackson and Co., Ltd., offered an average yarding of over 1000 sheep, besides 100 head of cattle. Owing to this sale being only the second since the holidays buyers were somewhat at a loss to know values and there was not the usual keenness in the bidding, but they were able to quit the bulk under the hammer. Lambs were in good demand and realised prices in. excess of rates ruling at outside markets. Prices were: Fair to good w.f. shorn wether lambs, 15/9; medium ditto, 13/6 and 14/-; cull lambs, 4/- to 5/10; four-tooth wethers, 21/10; light fat cows (dairy breeds), £2/6/-; 2}-year empty heifers, £2/10/-; small 2i-year steers, £3/16/-; three-year steers, £4 12/6; four-year bullocks. £5/7/6; yearling heifers, £l/10/-. Gisborne Sale Gisborne, January 26. At the Gisborne sale there was another short entry of fat sheep generally, good quality ewes, and an animated sale at advanced prices. Ewes, 13/8 to 15/7; four-tooths, 16/-; 2-tooth wethers, 20/5; medium lambs, 15/6. Stores: An entry of 6500 with values easier, particularly for lambs, as was anticipated due to the dry weather. Nevertheless there was good competition right through, showing a still considerable demand. Ewes, good mouths and condition, 12/8 to 13/11; ditto, medium condition, 9/7; aged and poor, 4/1 upward ; 2-tooths, medium, 16/3; good. 17/3 to 19/4; 2,4, and 6-tooth. good, 17/2; wethers, forward 4-tooths, 13/5; good 2 and 4-tooths, 17/10; ditto, ordinary condition, 16/9; 2-tooths, 15/8 upward ; lambs, best stores, 14/- to 14/9: fair condition, good frame ewes, 13/3; ditto wethers, 11/8; fairly good,' 9/2 to 9/7. Pigs met poor competition, and values slumped. Only a few beef cattle met a lifeless market. PIGS AND POULTRY Palmerston Prices Palmerston North, January 26. The Dominion Auctioneering Company held its weekly pig sale this afternoon. Compared with last week’s prices, the realisations were slightly better. There was a good demand for better sorts of pigs and weaners; stores and porkers drew the keenest bidding. There was only a fair demand for the weaker sorts. Practically all the lines were sold at the following prices:—Small weaners. 6/6 to 10/-; best weaners, up to 14/6; best slips, up to 16/6; stores, up to 21/-; porkers, up to 40/6. The following were the prices secured at Messrs. J. L. Bennett’s pig and poultry sale this afternoon:—Pigs: Weaners, 7/- to 10/-; slips, 8/- to 12/-; porkers, 23/-; boards, ljjgns. to ligns. Poultry : Small pullets, 1/4 to 3/3; good pullets, 4/- to 5/6; small cockerels, 3d. to 1/-; good cockerels, 1/8 to 3/3; hens. 9d. to 2/3; ducks, 1/- to 1/8; turkey bens, 3/6; turkey gobblers, 4/- to 5/6.
