The Flagpole Incident
Sir, —I should like to add to “E.’s” letter iu reply to “Early History,” that the Maoris were not forced to re-erect the flagpole at Kororareka. The hostile Ngapuliis insisted on doing so, about 1857, to show their friendliness. After that, Gore Browne and Domett (who had, unfortunately, as “AVaring,” given-Brown-ing the slip from Europe), insisted on starting a fresh war with Taranaki. and AVaikato Maoris, in hopes of “utu” for the AVairau massacre of 1843. Grey returned to restore peace. The church at Russell is marked by one or two accidental British bullets. If we want it really bullet-riddled we should get the next warship to give it a burst or two of machine-gun fire.—l am. etc.. . R. 11. FITZ-HERBERT. Havelock North, January 23.
