SWIMMING SPORTS Carnival at Petone Several close finishes gave interest to the Petone Amateur Swimming and LifeSaving Club's carnival in the MeKenzie Baths, on Saturday afternoon. The sport, on the whole, was good, but the attendance was disappointing. Many people, no doubt, stayed away on account of the heavy northerly wind which spoilt things somewhat from a spectator’s point of view. Two Wellington centre championships were decided, the 150yds. backstroke and the 880yds, In the former event B. Gallete (Lyall Bay) led for the first 100 yards, but at the third turn J. Williams (Lyall Bay) took the lead, and won by four feet. The 880yds. was won by J. C. Blakeley (Lyall Bay), who led all the waji and finished 20 yards ahead of J. Pennington (Wellington). The Possibles v. Probables polo match to choose the team to play Auckland in the New Zealand championships on February 16 was won by Possibles by 2 goals to 1. J. C. Blakeley scored both goals for the winners, while I. Palmer netted for Probables. Mr. P. Coira was referee. Officials for the carnival were as follow: —Starter, Mr. W. Gerrie; check starter, Mr. H.
