INTER-CLUB YACHTING
Good Sailing in Difficult
Conditions
EVANS BAY BOATS WIN
After postponement from the previous afternoon on account of heavy weather, races for the Inter-Club Cup, for 14footers, and Idle Along Championship, were sailed yesterday morning in Evans Bay under considerably worse conditions. The race for the Tauranga Cup was also started, but the sea and wind proved too much for the seven-footers, and by the end of the first round, when the race was called off, there were but two or three which had not experienced capsizqs, some of them several times. This race is to be resailed this evening at 6 o’clock. The Dunean Cup race was also to have been sailed, but the weather was adjudged too heavy for Takapunas.
Nine boats paraded for the start of the Inter-Club Cup, the course for which was from the starting line to Kio Bay, to Shag Point, to the bathing sheds, to the clubhouse, twice round. June was first away, witli Kio II rapidly working to weather, but Bolland was unlucky enough to have his pump break, and, being unable to keep the water down, he was forced to retire. June held her place for a while, but Kotare, last year s winner of the cup, gradually worked t° the front, while boat after boat capsized or withdrew. On the last run down to Shag Point, Kotare was leading Tassie by about 300 yards, with June and Impudence, the only otfiers left, a long way back, when her jib blew out, and Julian was forced to complete the course under mainsail only. Even so he finished but a minute behind Tassie, who with spinnaker set, flew past him on the run. June had a spectacular capsize further up the bay, leaving Impudence, the only other boat left on her bottom, to fill third place. The Idle Along Championship drew IS starters, but of this large field only eight survived the three laps. The course set was from the starting line to the slip buoy, to Shag Point, to the bathing sheds buoy, to the clubhouse. Mayfair took the lead from the start and her position never seemed endangered, running home to a comfortable victory four minutes ahead of Golden Ray and five minutes ahead of A r alada. the next two finishers. Capsizes and withdrawals were frequent, but Mayfair was the steadiest boat in the race. Only once did Beck strike trouble, when he missed the Shag Point mark, but it was soon remedied and he lost little of his substantia! lead. Evans Bay boats filled first and second places in this race, as they did also in the Inter-Club Cup race. Following are the detailed results, with finishing times:
