Passenger on Monterey Loses Jewellery DETECTIVES INVESTIGATE By Telegraph.—Ptvts* Association. Auckland, January 25. The disappearance of valuable jewellery from a cabin on the Monterey while the liner was approaching Pago Pago on January 15 was investigated by detectives on the arrival of the vessel at Auckland to-day. The jewellery, which belongs to Mrs. Thorold Fink, of Melbourne, a through passenger, consists of three rings and a brooch valued at about £440. The loss of the jewellery was reported to (he purser not long before the Monterey reached Pago Pago. Mrs. Fink is travelling alone, and the rings and |he brooch had been placed in a drawer of the cabin dressing table, which was not locked. They had disappeared the following morning. A careful investigation into the incident was conducted by the captain and purser of'the Monterey, The most valuable piece is a brooch, which is of platinum, and has 17 diamonds in a setting. It is valued at £lBO. Ono of the rings, set with sapphires and diamonds:, is w'orth £1(10. and another diamond cluster £lOO. while the third is only of a nominal value. j No (rave of the missing jewellery j had been found when the liner sailed for Sydney early in the evening.
