Vice-Regal. The Governor-General and Lady Bledisloe, who arrived in Auckland fronj Wellington by the Limited express yesterday, left at 10 a.m. in the Government steamer Matai for Russell, reports the Press Association. They were farewelled by the chairman of the Auckland Harbour Board and the harbourmaster. Their Excellencies will accompany the Duke of Gloucester on his inspection of the Waitangi Estate and will bid farewell to his Royal Highness on Tuesday. Ministerial. The Hon. R. Masters, Minister of Industries and Commerce, left Wellington for Stratford yesterday afternoon. He will return to Wellington early next week. The Hon. .1. Bitchener, Minister of Public Works, is visiting the South Island. Yesterday he inspected irrigation works at Seafield, near Ashburton, and also met the Ashburton Power Board and the Ashburton County Council. The Hon. E. A. Ransom, Minister of Lands, left Wellington for Dannevirke yesterday. z The Hon. C. E. Macmillan, Minister of Agriculture, will open the Horowhenua Show at Levin next Wednesday, and the Rangitikei Show at Marton on Thursday. On Friday Mr. Macmillan will address meetings of farmers at Te Mata and Raglan in the Waikato district. Sir Cecil Leys arrived at Wellington from the south yesterday morning, and left in the evening for the nortlp Professor Belshaw, economic advisor to the Government, arrived at Wellington yesterday from the south. Mr. A. M. Seaman, Auckland, was a passenger for the north last evening. Mr. C. B. Barraelough, Dunedin, left Wellington last evening for the south. Dr. 11. E. Austin. Cromwell, was a passenger last evening for the south. Dr. S. R. Cattell, Wellington, left last evening for the South Island. Mr. D. J. Gould, Christchurch, left Wellington last evening for the south. Mr. W. Stuart Wilson has returned to -Wellington from the north. Mr. J. 11. McKenzie, who has been visiting Wellington. left last evening for Christchurch. Mr. I. B. Cromb arrived at Wellington yesterday morning from Christchurch. Mr. J. W. G. Brodie, of British and Dominion Traders, Ltd., has returned to Wellington from the south. Dr. A. J. Mason arrived at Wellington yesterday morning from Ashburton. Mr. J. M. Elliffe, Auckland, who lias been visiting Wellington. left last evening for the north. Mr. W. Laird Thomson. Auckland, has been appointed secretary of the New Zealand Motor Racing Drivers’ Association. Mr. R. Hudson, a director of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, who has been visiting Wellington, left for Dunedin last evening. Mr. W. H. Johnston, Lower Hutt, has returned from a three mouths’ visit to New South Wales. Victoria, South Australia, and West Australia. Mr. Cecil Jameson,, the New Zealand artist, has four portraits in the exhibition of the Royal Society of Portrait Painters, says the “New Zealand News.”
Mr. C. G. White, Wellington, a director of the Union Steam Ship Company, left Wellington last evening for the south.
Mr. C. H. Burson, Christchurch, has been appointed the representative of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association on the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce. Mr. Norton Francis, Christchurch, a director of the Reserve Bank of New Zealand, arrived at Wellington yesterday morning, and. left again for the south iu the evening.
Mr. B. Anderson, of the Christchurch office of the Union Steam Ship Company, accompanied by Mrs. Anderson, left Wellington for the south last evening.
Mr. E. C. Hands, general manager of tlie Radio Broadcasting Board, and Mr. 11. D. Vickery, chairman, have returned to Wellington from Auckland, where they attended the opening of the new IYA studio. Mr. 11. N. Burns, secretary of tlie New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, is at present at Auckland in connection witli the championships, and will return to Wellington next Wednesday.
Mr. Ceredig Richards, of Auckland, has returned to London after four months of travel iu the Near East and in Europe. He made a commercial cinematograph film, which was on view at tlie Motor Show at Olympia, and is now being prepared for screening on the Continent in eleven languages. Dr. T. A. Mac Gibbon, the Christchurch specialist, lias visited tlie chief hospitals, medical colleges and most celebrated clinics in London, Edinburgh and Zurich, following very closely the latest developments in his branch of surgery. After bis return to London he will visit New York and Philadelphia to see tlie latest practice there. Mr. A. Vere Winchester, who has been manager of tlie Christchurch branch of the Bank of Australasia for nine years, will retire on March 2. He will be succeeded by Mr, A. 11. M. Mailing, who is at present manager of the Hamilton branch of the bank. Air. Winchester was born in Dunedin and joined tlie bank there. . Before going to Christchurch, he was manager or acting manager at tlie branches at Levin, Tiniaru, Dunedin and Whangarei. He will continue to live in Christchurch after his retirement. A Carnegie fellowship has been awarded to Dr. D. B. Macleod. D.Ssc., by the New Zealand University Senate. Dr. Macleod is lecturer in physics at Canterbury College. The fellowship is tenable for a year and carries a grant of £4OO. Professor J. Rankine Brown stated that Dr. Macleod had had a distinguished career and a trip abroad would be of great benefit to tlie university. Dr. Macleod was an observed and experimentalist of great distinction. It was right tliat lie should lie given the opportunity to visit centres where there were more facilities than there were here. He had made a discovery that had evoked considerable scientific discussion and which had led to other discoveries which marked a notable development in physical chemistry.
