Swamp Fires in Waikato By Telegraph—l’rcss Association. Hamilton, January 25. Heavy showers last evening have had the effect of curbing the spread of the swamp fires to-day, although little benefit lias been conferred upon tiie parched pastures. Tiie weather cleared to-day, the fires breaking out again with renewed intensity. Several haystacks in the Newstead and Eureka distMcts have been destroyed, and telegraph and power poles at Tauhei and Rukuiiia have been burned by roadside fires. Mi’. J. Nicholson and a party of settlers had a difficult task to save the Nicholson home when a change of wind carried showers of sparks over the building. It is estimated that 1500 acres of partially improved laud at Newstead has been burned over, and Unit the damage is in excess of £5OOO.
