Subsidised Schools

Sir.—l have read with interest a letter, dated January 10, written by Alex Riddell, on the above subject, and I am one of the many others who agree entirely with his views. The Government of this Dominion is expected to consider the people as a whole. It provides excellent education for all children, free of cost, and the brilliant careers of countless men and women who received their education at our public schools testify to the efficiency of the system. The Government has quite sufficient responsibility to shoulder without adding to it, and once it granted subsidies to Roman Catholic schools, other denominational schools throughout the land would be entitled to ask for similar concessions. Just ns the extension of free dental treatment to other than public school pupils may load to the inclusion of many whoso parents are able to pay for treatment, so the granting of subsidies to one denominational school would call forth demands from others. The staffs of. our schools are highly qualified and highly principled men and women. Those who are not prepared to accept the splendid educational opportunities offered by the Government should pay for the upkeep of their own schools, instead of making demands on an already over-burdened Government.—l am. etc.. FAIR BLAY. Hastings, January 21.
