AKATARAWA ROAD
Defence By-
Overseer
Commenting on an article which appeared in Wednesday's "Dominion” in which reference was made to the uneven surface of the Akatarawa Road and the disrepair of a small bridge in the vicinity, Hie overseer of the Hutt County Council, Mr. IL Dyer, in r.n interview yesterday said he considered it unfair to criticise that road when there were footpaths in Wellington, Lower Unit and elsewhere which jutted up and caused people to stumble. Tie said that visitors froqi the city, who did not contribute one! penny to the road’s upkeep, were largely responsible for its condition. Most, if not ail, of Hie vandalism "that occurred—tearing up trees and generally spoiling tlie appearance of the area—was done by visitors also. HORSE-DRAWN TRAFFIC Distribution of Fees “It is known that there are practically no licenses for horse-drawn traffic vehicles in the areas of local authorities outside of Hie city in this heavy traffic district, and that the vehicles licensed in Wellington make very little use of the roads maintained by tlie other authorities." stated a letter from the Wellington Town Clerk, received at the meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council last night. “In previous years tlie Wellington City ‘Council agreed to let these tees follow the same distribution as the motor traffic fees in order to encourage agreement among all local authorities with regard to tlie matters then in dispute. “In view of the fact that agreement is no longer sought for the distribution of heavy traffic fees, and that the order of the Minister does not appear equitable Io the Wellington City Council, this council will not. agree to Hie horsedrawn traffic fees paid after March 31 being distributed in the same manner as the motor fees. Therefore, the distribution will lie in accordance with the heavy traffic by-law of 1926, under which the Wellington City Council retains 15 per cent, and apportions the remainder among the local bodies in the snme percentages as are set out in danse 2 of the order of tlie magistrate made in December. 1931.” "How much do. we get'.'” inquired a councillor. Tlie town clerk and general manager. Mr. C. L. Bishop, said that only £l5O was collected last year. “There is nothing much in it from our point of view; it is only a matter of pence,” he said. Tlie letter was received. BOROUGH MERGER Eastbourne to Discuss Proposal A decision to discuss Hie question of amalgamation witli other local bodies was arrived at at (lie meeting of Hie Eastbourne Borough Council last night following Hie receipt of a letter which tlie Mayor. Mr. E. IV. Wise, received from tlie Mayor of Dower Hull. Mr. J IV. Andrews, who suggested a meeting "to explore the possibilities of a gradual merger.” "I think Hie matter of amalgamation, cropped up at a previous meeting and members, judging by I heir remarks, wore in favour of it." said Mr. Wise. •‘L'lWer Unit now seems very keen, and personally 1 think the time is opportune ami lias arrived when we should consider Hie question. I think |
the Hutt Valley should be one local I body, and I would like a committee appointed to meet Lower Hutt and have ti discussion with them.” Cr. M. Magill moved that Eastbourne be represented at the meeting. Cr. W. F. Ilornig said he understood from Mr. Andrews that he was going, to call a conference of all local bodies. Cr. C. IT. Andrews said lie thought Mr. Andrews’s letter was a personal invitation to Mr. Wise. “I think any discussion should be wilh the whole of the local bodies concerned,” lie said. Mr. Wise: “I think tlic same letter has been sent to all the local bodies interested.” Cr. Magill’s motion was carried. . SECURITY FOR LOAN Mayor of Eastbourne’s Comments Reference to Hie making of provision for a rate as security for the loan of £3OOO for the completion of Hie drainage scheme was made at the meeting of the Eastbourne Borough Council last night. The Mayor. Mr. E. AV. Wise, said: "It does not moan wo are going to increase the rates to get tliis. It just means we arc making Hie rate as a sAmrity for the loan.” At a later stage Mr. AVise said: “I think it would be disastrous to this place if any increase were made in thp rates,” Ho referred to tlie amenities of tlie borough, remarking that tlie people bail been given water and drainage. “This is one of the few places where there lias been no liard restriction on water. 'Pho only restriction was tliaf people were not allowed to leave their bases going all day and night. This is one of the few boroughs, especially during the snnimer. that can say that.”
