TO-DAY’S NATURE NOTE

A Mason Fly’s Novel Storehouse Recently I decided to enjoy a smoke once again from my favourite pipe, which had been in the pipe-rack for several weeks. When I took it down 1 found, to my surprise, that a mason fly had made a food-store of the pipe. The bowl was half-fulT of paralysed spiders, and over them was spread a layer of the mud-like cement these flies make. After emptying out the spiders, and scraping out the cement with a knife. I replaced the pipe in the rack, at the same time forgoing my smoke. A few days later, I again took down the pipe, and was astonished to find a recurrence of the mason fly’s activities. The bowl was again halffull of spiders, and a similar layer of cement was spread over them. This time the pipe was washed clean, and the mason fly has apparently become discour, aged, because no more spiders or cement have been carefully deposited in my pipe since.— (Belmont).
