gHE cannot read or write. She forgets her lines and then makes up her own version. She pokes fun at the director. That is Baby Jane. But, in spite of tins she made such an impression in her first Universal talkie role that she was signed to a long-term contract. This contract covers twice as many years as her present age. She won it for her work in "Imitation of Life” as the daughter of Claudette Colbert, who is starred with Warren William in this screen version of Fannie Hurst’s novel. Baby Jane was selected for her roie in “Imitation of Life” only after 200 other little tots had been given screen tests.
