BRICK SCHOOLS

Stability to be Tested SAFETY IN EARTHQUAKES The danger to school children from unstable brick school buildings is receiving the attention of the Wellington Education Board. A letter was received by the board at its meeting yesterday from the Education Department intimating that the department was of opinion that the board should arrange for its own officer to report on school buildings in the first instance and submit for its consideration an estimate of the cost of alterations necessary for safeguarding the children in event of an earthquake. The board’s draughtsman-supervisor, Mr. G. Drummond, was asked by Mr. L. J. McDonald (1) whether his present duties permitted sufficient time to make the investigation, and (2) whether he would prefer to undertake the work on his own account or with the co-operation of an engineer of the Public Works Department. Mr. Drummond said he had as much as he could conveniently e individually, and that he would welcome the assistance of a Public Works man. Accordingly. Mr. McDonald moved: “That the department be advised that the board’s officer has not the time to make the investigation promptly ami would like to be associated with a Public Works engineer loaned to the board to carry on the work.”

The motion was approved without dissent.
