WAIRARAPA PLAY
Women’s Singles Title to Mrs. McMaster TOURNAMENT CONCLUDES Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 24. Wind made conditions difficult for players to-day when the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship and handicap tournament was brought to a close. Players also had thick clouffis of dust to contend with on occasions. as it was blown up from the sunbaked courts. The Wairarapa veteran, Mrs. it. 11. McMaster, demonstrated that she had lost none of her courlcraft by outwitting Miss F. Fernie, the Wellington Nunueley Casket representative, in straight sets in the final of the women’s championship singles. Miss Fernie failed completely to find touch in the first set, which sue lost without even taking a game. Using her experience to advantage, Mrs. McMaster was content to outdrive .her opponent from the baseline. She was. stroking with precision, and finding the corners with remarkable accuracy under the conditions. It was not until'she had lost four games in the second set that Miss Fernie struck anything like form, and then she made Mrs. McMaster exert every bit of energy to win the set 6-3. When she did settle down Miss Fernie showed that she is the possessor of a very strong backhand drive. Some of her recoveries toward the latter part of the match were excellent, but Mrs. McMaster’s consistency proved, too much for her. Partnered by Mrs. Campbell, Mrs. McMaster met success in the women's doubles championship also. In a threeset match they accounted for Miss's D. Haggitt and Whisker (Wellington) in the final. All four played steady tennis, but superior tactics brought victory to Mesdalnes McMaster and Campbell. A 'Wellington pair, K. Dyer and Miss M. Macassey, annexed the combined doubles title, .by defeating the ex-Davis Cup representative. R. R. C. Young (Wellington) and Miss Latham (Wanganui), in the final after being taken to three sets. As all four players made not infrequent excursions to the net the match was marked by a considerable amount of volleying and overhead work, and many of the exchanges were quite interesting. Dyer proved superior in both departments, while his partner played consistently.- After losing the first set they clinched the next two fairly comfortably. Detailed results of to-day's play are as
