WELLINGTON LOAN

Alteration of Schedule Objected To COUNCIL DISCUSSION The Wellington City Council loan proposals involving a sum of £159,500 for new street works and storm water drains came before a special meeting of the council yesterday afternoon. The Mayor, Mr. T. C. A. Hislop, said the loan was now before the Government Loans Board, but it seemed that some of the works included in the loan had been gone on with during last year and the schedule required some alteration.- The amount so expended was £4280, representing work done in Upland Hoad, Chilton Avenue, Mornington Hoad, Kenya Hoad, Breaker Bay Road, Cecil Road and Belvedere Road. Cr. R. McKeen said there were certain things that councillors should face up to, and suggested that the loan should be put to the ratepayers in two sections—storm water drains and street works. “We can leave that until later, when we get the permission of the Government Loans Board,” said the Mayor. “For Council to Determine.” “Its for the Council to determine this,” said Cr. McKeen. “I want to talk about the schedule of works. I am satisfied that there tire large areas the people of which will not vote for the street works. Those are areas which have been neglected tor years. While other new suburbs have been given tar-sealed roads and footpaths, these people have not even been given footpaths, leave alone tar-sealed roads. “We have created a situation consciously that is going to rebound on us.” Cr. McKeen suggested that the amount for the sea-wall at Island Bay and the widening of the bridge at Happy Valley should be transferred from street works to storm water works. , Cr. P. Butler referred to Cr. MeKeen’s double-headed penny, ami said he did not see how he was going to include a sea-wall and bridge under storm water, unless a storm was coming up from the strait. He scarcely though Cf. McKeen could be in earnest. Ratepayers Object. Cr. McKeen said he certainly was in earnest. The allocation in the schedule was agreed to. The Mayor stated objections. had been lodged to the loan by Mr. 11. S. Pillar, builder, of Cecil Road, Wadestown, and the Wellington Ratepayers Association. Cr. Gaudin said be understood the association objected to certain maintenance work being done out of loan money. If that were so he agreed with them. Arrangements were made for an answer to both objections to be furnished to the Loans Board.
