WAIPUKURAU SHOW

Auspicious Revival LIST OF AWARDS Dominion Special Service. Waipukurau, January 23. The Waipukurau A. and P. Association. held its fat sheep and lamb show in conjunction with the gymkhana, axemen’s carnival and dog trials, at the racecourse, to-day. The association, which has been'dormant since IJ3I, lias staged its revival under most auspicious circumstances, the show being a complete success from every aspect. Certain ot the less popular 'stock classes were depleted this year, and the inclusion of the axemen’s events, dog trials, and national dancing, was justified by the results. Entries in classes where a comparison is available showed an increase oyer the show four years ago. The weather was perfect, and there was a large attendance from all parts of Central Hawkes Bay, and many visitors came by train from as far north as Hastings and as far south as Palmerston North. The officials worked hard to ensure the success of the fixture. Special credit is due to the president, Mr. J. D. -Ormond, junr., whose enthusiasm is largely responsible for the resuscitation, and the efficient secretary, Mr. G. Reg. Cook. Interest of the farming community centred in the fat sheep and lamb dismay, which should do much to educate the Tarniers as to the type of earcase demanded by the export trade. The judge, Mr. Maxwell, Hastings, said that although the entries were not so numerous as he could have wished, owing probably to the dry conditions, there were several pens of excellent lambs, particularly the heavy sorts. Ho made special mention of the Down lambs displayed by J. J. Harwood, and said there were some nicely finished lambs of fine type for the English market. The horse competitions, as usual., were popular "with the public, the principal event, the open jump, going to O. Nelson s Whangarei. The axemen’s carnival attracted great interest. . ~ The New Zealand . championship Ibinch standing chop was won by W. Johnston in sGsec., and the £OO open handicap 14-inch standing chop by M. C. Parker. A boxing contest between Waipukurau and Parkvale schools resulted in a draw, three-all. after bright exhibitions.. The association renders valuable service to the district, and it is hoped that henceforth the show will continue as an annual event. The results are as follows: — HORSE section. (Judge, Mr| J. J.
