BEAR OF OAKLAND

—♦ Welcome by Expedition DISCOVERY ON VOYAGE (Received January 22, 8.15 p.m.) Little America, January 21. The Bear of Oakland arrived yesterday bringing much welcomed mail to tiie expedition, and now is moored alongside the ice, seven miles from the camp. Reloading for tiie return is already under way. On the 450 miles’ sail along the front of the Ross ice barrier from Cape Crozier, Captain English ififtde the extraordinary discovery that the great barrier moves half a mile yearly and that nearly the whole of its winding length is now about 12 miles northward from the position fixed during the Terra Nova survey in 1911. As the Bear appeared in sight a blast of dynamite was exploded in welcome.
