YACHTING REGATTA
Successful Event at Evans Bay LARGE FIELDS AND KEEN RACING The annual Anniversary Day regatta conducted by the Wellington Provincial Yacht and Motor Boat Association was held yesterday in Evans Bay and proved to be the most successful Anniversary Day regatta for many seasons. There were about 50 boats of various sizes and classes racing, and the large fields and keen racing provided a most entertaining day’s sport for both competitors and onlookers alike. The wind in the morning was of varying strength and very flukey, the boats frequently getting breaks and lifts from most unexpected sources. In the afternoon, however, the breeze settled down to a fresh full-sail nor’-wester, although some fierce squalls at times made things excifmg for the centreboard crews. Apart from one unfortunate incident the long programme of events ran very smoothly, reflecting great credit on the sailing committee. In the afternoon race for Idle Alongs, however, there was much confusion. The race was to have been sailed over three rounds of the inside course, but, according to the official decision, the boats in the leading bunch all pulled out at the end of their second lap. Only four out of the field sailed on and completed another lap. and these were set down as the only finishers. A protest has been entered, however, but in the meantime the result officially given is printed below. Following are the results of the races, the times given being handicap, finishing time and corrected time: — KEELER HANDICAP.
