Another So-called “Strad”
Sir, —I also have a violin with a label inside the same as described from Mr. Gething’s, and “Violin O’s” instruments; but all the lettering and figures are particularly clear, showing the date as 1716. My instrument has a wonderful tone, which lias been many times remarked upon, and very. clearly shown by the many attempts that have been made to buy it from me by players who know a good instrument when they hear or play one.
“Kickshaws” refers to the varnish on a genuine “Strad.” I can only say that the varnish on niy violin is of a quality that I have never seen on any other Violin. What I would like to know is, what are the distinguishing qualifications of a genuine “Strad?” If, as “Kickshaws” says, there are so many violins bearing the Stradivarius label, there must surely be some method whereby a genuine ‘‘Strad” can be distinguished from an imitation. —I am, etc., ANOTHER “STRAD.” Pukehinau, January 18.
