Homing Pigeons For Trampers

Sir, —I see there is another tramper missing and a search party is out trying to locate him. If successful a lot of territory will have to be covered first Now, my idea is that anyone taking on these tramping trips should be compelled to carry a homing pigeon (the total weight of bird, container and food is three pounds), and upon a tramper getting lost or meeting with an accident the. bird could be released with a message giving brief particulars. It would be home in under one hour, and the searchers would have an idea where to look and what equipment to take out. Any member of a club would lend a bird for the trip, and if help were required, upon its arrival would notify the authorities. I myself have used pigeons scores of times as message carriers. I could fill a book in quoting what they have done in New Zealand. I trust someone else will take this matter up and help to save needless expense and perhaps lives.—l am, de., ‘ B.C.P.H.
