Wairarapa Tournament NEARING FINAL ROUNDS Dominion Special Service. Masterton, January 22. Conditions which were a vast improvement on yesterday’s boisterous weather favoured the continuation of the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association’s annual championship and handicap tournament to-day. Bright sunshine prevailed throughout the day, and except for about half an hour toward midday tho Wind caused players no undue trouble. Excellent progress was made with the various events to-day, aud all were well advanced. Home excellent tennis was seen to-day as the rounds advanced toward the semifinals aud finals. One of the best clashes of the day was that between E. M. Hodder (Masterton) and K. Dyer (Wellington). which was won by the former after a strenuous struggle in the third set. Charters got through to the quarterfinals by eliminating two promising local players, P. "Hawksworth and D. B. Poiuton, in the third aud fourth rounds, in straight sets. A large gallery watched Pointon and Hawksworth eliminate Dyer and Charters from the championship doubles after an editing match, marked by exhilarating tennis. After dropping the first set 2-6, the local players clinched the second at 9-7, and outplayed the visitors to the tune of G-l in the final set. The women’s singles match in which Miss Whisker defeated Miss Macassey, 6-1, 1-6, 6-3, was marked by splendid driving and .accurate placements. • The men's handicap singles, B grade, was decided to-day, the event resulting in a win for H.
