VALEDICTORY HONOURS

As an appropriate gesture of acknowledgment of untiring and efficient services rendered to his Royal Highness the Duke of Gloucestei throughout his tour of the Dominion, the King has conferred Lie honour of knighthood on the - Hon. J. A. Young, Minister of Interna Affairs, and distinctions of varying degree upon Mr. Malcolm. braser, Under-Secretary of Internal Affairs; the Commissioner of Police, Mr. W. G. Wohlmann; Mr. H. M. Patrick, Transport Officer; and members of the attendant corps of police officers and mep. The task of conducting a Royal personage on an extended tour in safety and comfort is no light one. Moreover, it is one of serious responsibility. Spectators of the Duke’s progress in various parts ot the country,-seeing only the surface of thingy, have found in the clockwork regularity of events something to admire; but only those behme the scenes can have any idea of the long hours of anxious preparation, forethought, and working out of details involved in such a tour. - Train schedules had to be mapped out, and the lines patrolled : highway travel had to be piloted; baggage carefully supervised, checked and dispatched; police precautions taken over a wide area. Ano these are only part of the duties. . . t r < That the arrangements were carried out with a minimum ot disturbance of the, regular public services, that everything went smoothly without confusion or mishap, is an achievement highly creditable to the Minister and his official assistants. One and all ot them will be relieved and glad, not that the Royal visit is ovei., but that their task has been accomplished without untoward incident. They are to be congratulated on the fact that his Royal Highness has marked his appreciation of their services by recommending the bestowal of these honours upon them.
