MANY GORSE FIRES

Long Fight at Island Bay Yesterday was one of the busiest days the Wellington Fire Brigade has had this summer in the extinguishing of grass and gorse fires. Between 2.18 pan. and 8.52 calls were received to fires at Seatoun Heights Road, Kotinga Street, Melrose, th c rear of Government House, Barnard Street, Wadestown, Endeavour Street, Lyall Bay; Albert Street, Island Bay; Thorndon Quay, at Hospital Road at the rear of the hospital, and twice the brigade went to Old Borirua Road, between Ngaio and Khandallali. The fire at Albert Street, to which the brigade was called at 4.34, caused a great column of smoke to rise into the air and between fifteen and twenty acres of gorse and grass was burned. The heavy smoke 1 was unpleasant for the occupants of a group of houses to leeward, and property appeared to be in danger, but the firefighters prevented any actual damage. The brigade was about three hours fighting this fire, and did not have the assistance of water.
