“Not Understood”

Sir,—I wonder if “Scot,” who wrote oj. Burns in your issue of January 19, has read all the original poems of Burns: I could send you a few that I do not think you could publish. Some prominent visitor—I think it was Mr. Amery—was reported in the newspapers to have said after visiting Dunedin that they no longer required to teach their children the old ‘Scotch prayer, “Lord gie us a good conceit o’ oorsels.” A finer poem than any of Burns’s, “Not Understood.” was written in Dunedin; but, alas! Bracken was an Irishman. This poem is becoming a classic, and I am told is in many class books in Europe without the author’s name.—l am, etc., “AND UNDERSTOOD.”
