SWIMMING CONTROL

Business of Wellington Centre CARNIVAL ON FEBRUARY 2 A variety of business was dealt witn by delegates to the Wellington Centre, New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association, last night. Mr. W. H. Gerrie occupied the chair. • The chairman extended a welcome to the delegate from the Hataitai Swimming Club, Mr. E. G. T. Emerson, this club having recently affiliated. The secretary, Mr. N. N. Oldershaw, advised that the men’s and women’s diving events for the New Zealand swimming championships would be the same as last year. The fixture will be held at Auckland on Saturday. February 16. Mr. A. A. Jenkins ,( Wellington Amateur Swimming Club) sought a ruling on a point concerning the registration of dub members. He said the annual return of members related to the previous year’s membership list. Considerable discussion followed ou the question of the loss by the Wellington club of young swimmers to other clubs, particularly surf dubs. It was contended that the Wellington dub was being looked upon merely as a training ground for other clubs, there being no method of holding such swimmers for the completion of a full season with that dub. or any other dub. The chairman commented that the question was really one. of. good sportsmanship on the part of individual dubs. At his suggestion it was left to the various delegates to take the sentiment of good-fellowship to their dubs. Appreciative reference to the work for swiiniping of Mr. D. S. N. McCartney was made by several speakers during discussion of a motion by Mr. Jenkins, seconded by Mr. E. B. Hughes (Maranui Surf Club) that application be made by the centre to the New Zealand Amateur Swimming Association for an honours blazer for Mr. McCartney in recognition of his services. Smaller Committee Suggested.

Advocacy of the management of the centre’s affairs by a committee of seven or nine in place of control by the present large bodv of delegates from the dubs, was urged by the Wellington club, through Mr. Jenkins. He said the existing arrangement was unwieldy, and made for a waste of time. Other sports organisations were run more efficiently by a small management committee. Other delegates disagreed in principle, while admitting that detail work could well be handled by a small committee. The weight of the meeting was against the proposal.

Carnival Dates. The I’ctone Swimming Club was granted permission to hold its carnival ou January 26, and the Public Service Sports Association for one on February 20. The Hataitai dub was allotted February 16 for a carnival in Evans Bay. February 6 was approved for the Carterton club’s carnival. . The centres annual carnival, which was declared off last Saturday on account of the rain, was discussed at length with a view to seeking another date. Mr. Gerrie mentioned that he had endeavoured with the approval of the representatives of a number of clubs to get Te Aro Baths on Anniversary Day afternoon.. Cr. J. Burns had informed him that the baths were out of the question, as the City Council’s by-laws required three days’ notice to the public by advertisement of an intention to close the baths to general use.

As an alternative the Worser Bay dub agreed to forgo its carnival on February 2 so that the centre could go on with its postponed carnival ou that date. Entries for the Worser Bay breaststroke banner relay close on Saturday, the event taking place at the centre's carnival. Mr. L. Dawkins (Lyall Bay) 'raised

the question of converting the handicap system for the Peek Shield teams’ event to a sealed handicap race, the teams to be handicapped as tgams and not as individuals. The suggestion, was referred to the clubs for consideration. Draw for Polo. Following are the fixtures for the second round of the A grade polo competition, all events being at Te Aro baths:—January 29, Hutt v. Maranui, Mr. _ P. Coira; January 31, Lyall Bay v. Varsity, Mr. A. Somerville; February 5, Maranui v. Lyall Bay, Mr. V. Allan: February 7, Wellington v. Hutt, Mr. Alexander; February 12, Hutt v. Lyall Bay, Mr. W. Gerrie; February 14, Varsity v.
