HUNGARY’S REPLY

Complaint By Yugoslavia PUNISHMENT OF POLICE (British Official Wireless.) Rugby, January IS. The Hungarian Government’s memorandum on the inquiry undertaken in reply to the complaint of the Government of Yugoslavia alleging Hungarian responsibility for the Marseilles murders was issued at Geneva this morning. It denies responsibility for any connection with the assassinations. Certain minor Hungarian police officers, it is admitted, had not controlled Croat immigration with necessary diligence and two police captains had been dismissed and three policemen sentenced to imprisonment. A stricter measure of control of foreigners and the issue of passports is promised. When the matter came before rhe League Council. Mr. Anthony Eden’s report asking Yugoslavia and other members of the Council to communicate any observations on the Hungarian memorandum in writing to him as rapporteur was accepted. A Geneva cable states that, claiming that it hail now carried out the obligations laid down by the League, a Hungarian memorandum reports that five police officials have been punished. Though it is impossible to establish any direct or indirect connection between the Hungarian authorities and the Marseilles assassinations, the police failed efficiently to control Crotian emigrants.
