WATER IN HOLD
Frozen Meat Carcases Being Transferred WAIPAWA AT AUCKLAND By Telegraph—Frees Association. Auckland, Jauuary 20. Owing to water leaking into the No. 2 lower Hold of the Shaw, Savill and Albion Company’s motor-ship Waipawa, about 24,000 carcases of frozen meat is being.transferred from the hold into other freezing chambers in the ’tween decks to ascertain if any damage has been done to the earcases stowed in the bottom of the bold. The leak into the hold was not due to a defect in the vessel’s construction, but was caused through a fresh water hose being accidentally led into the bilge pipe instead of into the fresh water tank, with the result that the bilges filled and the water overflowed into the bottom of the lower hol'd before the mistake was noticed. Since the accident happened waterside workers-have been employed unloading the hold and lifting the carcases of meat into the freezing chambers in the ’tween decks in the same hatch. The unloading of the hold will be completed to-morrow. Any carcases damaged will be sent ashore for reconditioning. The insulation in the bottom of the hold may also be damaged and necessitate repairs before the hold is reloaded. The Waipawa is the company’s newest motor-ship, and is on her maiden voyage. The vessel arrived from Wanganui on Wednesday and was to have sailed on Saturday for Napier and Wellington to complete loading. The accident to the hold is delaying her departure.
