The great bascules bf Tower Bridge were raised to let through the biggest ship that has ever been safely berthed in the Pool of London. The ship was the Blue Star liner Celtic Star, 5574 tons, and her successful passage up to London Bridge may be regarded as a signal event in the history of the port. The Blue Star Line were experimenting to ascertain if their ocean-going fruit ships could dock at Fresh wharf, London Bridge, recently taken over by the Union Cold Storage, Limited. The success of the experiment means that at least six Blue Star fruit ships will be aide to discharge there. The Celtic Star is 390 ft. long and 53ft. in beam, and draws2o ft of water.
