SURF LIFE-SAVING

Beach Day at Lyall Bay A beach day, conducted by the Wellington section of the New Zealand Surf Association, was held at Lyall Bay yesterday in the presence of a large crowd of spectators. Officials in charge of the competition were: Referee, Mr. V. Allen; marshal, Mr. N. A. Ingram;, judges, .Messrs. L. Dawkins, W. J. Beveridge and W. 11. Gerrie; assistant marshal, Mr. W. Griffen; timekeepers, Messrs. T. Ricketts, J. Hislop, J. Foley and K. Wilton. Mr. P. Coira. president of the New Zealand Surf Association, presented the prizes to the successful teams at the conclusion of the competition. The Wellington provincial beltm«n’s championship, the junior cup and the Otaki Shield were competed for. Lyall Bay club teams, with their fast swimmers, were most successful, being winners and runners-up in the beltman’s championship and also collecting the honours in the Otaki Shield. The beltman’s championship is a contest for teams of four men, each beltman’s time being registered and the lowest aggregate time determining the winners. It proved a fairly severe test. Results are as follow:— Beltman’s Championship.—Lyall Bay A (R. Pelham. J. Williams, F. J. Ryan and J. Blakeley), 17.42 2-5, 1; Lyall Bay B (G. Williams, A. Cunningham, 1.. McKeeman and F. Mollier), 18.36, 2; Maranui (H. Durant, C. Eversleigh, J. Hewitt, E. Raven), 19.24 1-5. 3; Worser Bay (E. Hepburn, — Bell, G. Turney, K. Wilton), 21.10 7-10, 4. Fastest individual times were as follow: J. Blakeley (Lyall Bay A), 4.0; A. Cunningham (Lyall Bay' B), 4.20; R. Itelhaip (Lyall Bay A), 4.24 3-5; G. Williams (Lyall Bay B), 4.30; F. J.
