GIRL DROWNED

Two Attempts at Rescue STRUGGLE IN SURF Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 20. A drowning occurred this afternoon at Film, on the west coast, the victim being Elvira Livingstone, aged 21, of 10 Sussex Street, Grey Lynn. When it was seen that Miss Livingstone was in difficulties, an St tempt at rescue was made by Mr. Arthur Woolock, of Ellerslie. He reached the young wojjian, but her struggles and the pounding of a heavy surf broke his hold and she was carried out by Hie undertow. A member of the Piha Surf Club, Mr. E. O’Brien, swam out, and after being in the water for about 20 minutes found Miss Livingstone, and without the assistance of a iife-line succeeded in bringing her ashore, where oilier members of the club were waiting with hot blankets.

Artificial respiration was applied and every effort was made to resuscitate Miss Livingstone, but without avail.
