Two fishermen had an unusual experience while fishing in Lyttelton Harbour recently. They were fishing from a small dinghy, and, as the sea was becoming choppy, they tied the boat up short to the staging of the pile light in the middle of the harbour, and climbed on to the staging to fish. They fished for some hours, and then, when they were ready to leave, they were dismayed to find that the falling tide had left their dinghy hanging by its painter high and dry. Their signals for assistance were not noticed for some time, as interest was centred on two sailing boats which had capsized, but they were finally taken off by the passenger launch Stanley, leaving the dinghy still hanging.

Cucumbers, which usually are plentiful at Auckland in January and February, are almost unprocurable owing to the' unusually dry weather. The exceptional slimmer heat has been conducive to the spread of "rust” and also has assisted the red spider in its depredations on the plants. “The season for cucumbers is virtually over already,” said a produce merchant.
