CAUSE OF BABY’S DEATH
Hauptmann Trial Evidence New York, January 17. A county medical practitioner, Dr. Mitchell, gave evidence that the Lindbergh child died practically instantaneously from “a very extensive fracture of tlie skull.” Ilis evidence was the high-light of a day in which a score of witnesses gave evidence. They established corpus delicti, told of th 4 preparation of the ransom money, and related the incident of the passing of the bill which led to the arrest of Hauptmann. A petrol-filling station employee testified that an observation by a man who gave him a 10-dollar gold note that “he had 100 others like it” led him to put the motor license number down on the bill. This resulted in the apprehension of the defendant. His nerves apparently strained by hearing how the baby died and the further detailed accounts of how ho himself was arrested, and found with the ransom money, Hauptmann leaped up and shouted at the Federal agent who was giving evidence of the manner in which he conducted himself when taken into custody, “Mister, mister, you stop lying.” He was immediately dragged down by police officers, and the judge calmly warned him to make whatever observation ho wished to make quietly through counsel.
