SURF LIFE-SAVING

Dominion Championships programme finalised I This week’s meeting of the New Zealand Surf and Life Saving Association, held at the Lyall Bay Surf and Life Saving Club's rooms, was presided over by Mr. P. F. Coira. Those present were Messrs. V. L. Allen, A. Ross, N. A. Ingram, J. Milburn, iV. H. Gerrie, H. J. Fulford, H. Dickson, and the hon. secretary, Mr. F. Chapman. The action of the special committee in accepting the quotation for the surf medallions was approved. The medallions will be ready for issue in two weeks. As all the information necessary was not to hand, it was decided to defer the allocation of £5O to the district associations until next meeting. Secretaries are requested to forward the necessary information fls soon as possible, so that the claims of their association may be considered. , , In response to an inquiry it was decided to advise that the special blazer awarded by the association could be worn only by past winners of the Nelson Shield and William Henry Memorial Trophy. Judging Expenses. „ It was decided that 33 1-3. per cent, o* the expenses of judges appointed by the council to officiate at the national championships be defrayed by the council from the New Zealand championship fund. A report from the hononary chief instructor was submitted in response to a request from the Wellington association. The report, Which was adopted, statec . (1) The requirements of the surf medallion as to the necessary questions to be asked were quite clear in the handbook, as was also the necessity of examining the candidate in his ability to. prove by practical demonstration his ability to use the blanket in the promotion of warmth of the apparently drowned. Examiners for the surf medallion must therefore satisfy themselves on these important points before a candidate was passed. (2) Patients and beltmen must use a double overarm stroke in the swimming portion of the test. The breaststroke must not be used. Arrangements for Championships. Fitzroy beach, New Plymouth, was approved as the venue of this yeag’s national life-saving championships. ’ Entries close on February 7. Entrance fees must accompany entries. As heats will be drawn immediately after closing date, no late entries will be accepted. For team events the names of individual members of the team must be nominated with the entry. Two emergency names may be nominated in addition to original team. A certificate must be forwarded by the secretary of the district association that all entrants hold the surf medallion. All nominations for officials must be in the hands of the secretary of the council by February 7. The annual conference of delegates has been arranged for Friday, February 22. All remits must reach the council oy January 31. All district associations are specially requested to arrange if possible to be directly represented at the conference by members of their association and so ensure a useful and successful conference. Competitors and officials would be given coloured badges entitling them to entrance free to swimming baths, competitions, enclosure, golf on the Fitzroy links, .etc. The Fitzroy Seaside Society are allowing competitors free camp sites. The Taranaki association is erecting tents for reels, officials, afternoon tea, etc., and teams so desiring may use these tents for camping. The programme arranged for I’ riday, February 22, is a visit to Mount Egmont in the afternoon. In the evening delegates will meet in conference, while a meeting of judges will also be held. On Saturday, “ February 23. from 10.30 in the morning to 5 p.m., the competitions will be in progress. In the evening, commencing at 7.30, a combined New Plymouth swimming and surf clubs’ carnival will be held, followed by a dance at K.awaroa Park. On Sunday the competitions will be finalised and a social held in the evening. Extra events for the championships are the beach belt race, chariot race and beach relay race of four men to a team. The land drill will be an exhibition only by a Taranaki team. The next meeting of the council will be held on February 27 at the Maranui Surf and Life-Saving Club's rooms.
