BRAINWAVE
Mother (to Bobbie, aged four): “I don’t know what we shall do for tea, dear; the baker hasn’t called, and we have no bread left.” Bobby: “Never mind, mummy, let’s have toast.” SPRING REVELS An elfin spree, under the green tree, Wouldn’t you like to go? It’s the secretest, secretest thing in the world, And never a soul must know. When it’s dark to-night, and the stars are bright, You just come creeping slow, Come peeping, creeping slow. It’s the spring in the air that brings them there. Wouldn’t you like to go, too? Then come with me, and magic you’ll see. And mystic things I will tell to you. When it’s dark to-night, and the stars are bright You’ll see the fairy revel crew. See the airy, fairy crew, You’ll see them dance, and sing and prance. Fairy, and rabbit; and bird, You’ll see the spring revel in the night, But you never must speak a word. And so to-night, when the stars are bright, You’ll hear the things that never were heard. Strange, magic things that never were heard. —Original by Mary Greig, aged 14, ■Wanganui.
