Early Maori War
Sir, —Your account of the fighting at Gate Pa was most interesting, as I have been on the spot at Tauranga and also in the redoubt on the hill (where such an historic spot is well preserved) and then the cemetery close by—with the names of those who fell at the storming of the Gate Fa. It is nice to know that those who fell will not be forgotten, but refreshed with the naming of the man-of-war, H.MJS. Esk. But what I would like to ask is what is done to preserve the names of those who fought at Russell, Bay of Islands, whose names are on the tombstones jn the churchyard alongside the church, which is riddled with bullet holes. Cannot someone more able than I am give an account of the early brushes with the Maoris at Russell, when the Natives pulled down the flagpole and had to replace it after repeated protests. This would be before the Gate Pa incident, and probably before the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi, but I am not sure.—l am, etc., EARLY HISTORY. ■Wellington, January IS.
