Aviation at Palmerston (From “The Dominion/’ January 17, 1910.) Barnard Bros., who hail from,Auckland, but have been experimenting with an aeroplane on the Palmerston Show Grounds for the past two months, made several trials on Saturday afternoon. Their aeroplane is a contrivance composed of light battens, wires and calico, thirty feet long, eight feet high aud four feet wide, built on two runners and with a four-inch wheel in front. It is supposed to be controlled and steered by means of ropes working hinged flaps lit the extreme ends. The trials consisted of attaching the structure to a buggy, in which ti-ere a pair of horses, at the end of a long rope. Then the horses were set galloping the length of the oval against the wind. On one occasion the concern rose about ten feet from the ground and sailed along about a hundred yards, but on each of four or five trials something went astray, which took a considerable time to put right. On one occasion the aeroplane lifted a couple of passengers a couple of feet from the ground, but when it touched earth again so much damage was done that the trial was abandoned for the day and a motor-car, which was waiting to take it round the grounds at a greater speed, was not attached. « » * The following are the results of the borough pollings in the general election in the United Kingdom so far to hand:— Liberals. 32; Unionists. 32; Labour, 6; Nationalists, 6.
