A Quiet Morning NOTES AND COMMENTS Prominent Owner Returning to Game (By "The Watcher.") There are no visiting horses at TrentIham yet, and work on the tracks is still confined to local stables, the galloping yesterday exciting little interest. The plough track, which is watered overnight, is in most demand, -though the trial grass, which participates in the watering of the course proper with the special sprinklers, is in excellent order. The course proper, as a result of the watering that has been pursued, is in first-class condition, and has to be seen to realise the value of the' treatment it is receiving. Jumpers Return. R. W. Lewis has returned from Auckland with Billy Boy and Verden. Verden was on the tracks yesterday morning doing pace work. He lightened up a little as a result of the trip. Lew's has taken over the interest of Mr. G. J. Quirke in Billy Boy, and in future the steeplechaser will race iu the colours of Lewis, with a contingency. Engage:! on Concluding Days. Saltspray, who returned on th" Wanganella this week, is out at Trentham. and yesterday morning he was exercised on the. lead. Saltspray won a race recently in Victoria, 'but on the whole his form was very disappointing. He looks very well, and is in hard, muscular condition. He is engaged here on the two concluding days. Red Sun. Red Sun is working well, as usual, and it is doubtful if be was ever in such good order as he is at present. A repetition of his Manawatu Cup running would make him dangerous in the Wellington Cup. Gone Sore. J. Ayres has lost the services of Otaurn King, just when the gelding looked like winning a race. He has developed tendon soreness. Autopay. Autopay is putting plenty of dash into his work, which is done the reverse way round, as he is allowed his own rules immediately he gets on to the galloping
I track, and will go the reverse way, but not -the correct way. He may not be so round in condition as he has been on former occasions, but he is fit and well. The bloom of his youth is now behind him. Longer Journey May Suit Her. • Princess Doreen continues on the right wav, and she is one of the fancied candidates for the Telegraph Handicap, more so now that L. J. Ellis will have the ride. ■Princess Doreen is very muscular and well, but she appeals more now as a handicap prospect than as a brilliant sprinter. ■ In Excellent Condition. Chile is among the morning workers at Trentham, but it is not proposed to race him till later in the season. P. Burgess has this well-bred gelding in first-rare order. He is carrying good condition, and never looked better in all his career. Home Again. The Hastings trainer, W. Griffith, wno took Limbohm to Australia, returned this week by the Wanganella. ami he went home to Hastings yesterday. Limbohm was left in Sydney, where he has been turned out, and there is little likelihood that he will return to New Zealand. Concerning the reports that he was likely to stay permanently in Melbourne, Griffith said that was not on the cards at present. It would not be worth while going back to one horse, but with a good horse or two a trip to Melbourne would be well worth while. Racing was in a flourishing condition in Melbourne, and the Ring was particularly strong, a good price, for plenty of money, always being obtainable. By the Watch. The gallops at Trentham yesterday by the watch, were as follow: —Red Sun picked up by Sunee. six furlongs in 1.16 J, Sunee beaten but hanging on well. Autopay easing up at the end of four in 54; Niglitlass holding Helium at the end of four in 49J. Dark Red and Debham taking 50i. Pnree ran seven in 1.31 and Princess Doreen sprinted three furlongs in 38, Going Gay taking 37j. Dymond Jumps. "Diamond jumped a round of the schooling hurdles and then went over three more, knocking down the pony hurdle. He is to race at Ashhurst. Cup Riding Record. Roy Reed easily holds the riding record for the ■Wellington Cup. Including two dead-heats he has won it six times, scoring on Rewi Poto (dead-heat with Red Ribbon) 1910. Kilmoon (dead-heat with Oratress) 1920, Maioha 1921, Rapine 1023 Star Stranger 1928 and Comprjs 1932. His brother, Ashley Reed, who has been living in Melbourne since 1924. won the Wellington Cun_on Bee in 1916, and on Bunting in 1917. On Tout le Monde Again. The Ricearton apprentice H. Mackmnon, who rode with great success during the holidays, will pilot Tout le Monde m
the Wellington Cup, his other engagements on the first day at Trentham being for Alchmic, Abdication and the Love in the Mist gelding, who has been named Landru. Not Engaged. The New Plymouth trainer, R. Johnson, denies the report that IV. E. Pine has been engaged to ride Courtega, Lalla Quex and Aussie Ra at Ashhurst. If present intentions are adhered to the stable apprentice L. Pell, will have the mounts. Brief Visit. G. Jones, Mr. W. R. Kemball’s private trainer at Caulfield, did not have a very long stay in New Zealand. He arrived by the Wanganella on Tuesday night, and left on the return trip by the same steamer yesterday. He took back the five two-year-olds and the yearling that have been prepared hereby IV. McConkey. Unusual. The Dunedin "Star” reports some incidents at Vincent“J. IV. Dooley was fined £2 for ignoring the judge. Dooley, rider of Daring Deed, thought he had won the Clare Memorial Handicap, an opinion shared by a large number of the spectators, but the judge decided in a dead-heat, and told Dooley to wait until the rider of First Song returned to. the judge’s box. Dooley, however, rode on into the enclosure and thus earned the displeasure of the committee. . The judge also appeared to make a mistake in the first race, when he placed Morena half a head in front of Final Bell, who looked to have at least a neck advantage.” Mishap to Imaniint. While working on the tan at Ellerslie Imamint over-reached and badly cut one of her front tendons. She was distinctly lame afterward, and the injury will probably prevent her from racing at the Takapuna meeting. Gay Marigold’s Rider. It has been decided that Gay Marigold will contest the ‘Wellington Cup, and her stable mate, King March, will remain at home for the Takapuna Cup. R. S -Bagby will leave for Trentham on Friday. H. Goldfinch will ride Gay Marigold and Lucidus at Trentham. and will return north after the second day of the Wellington meeting to take the mount on King March in the Takapuna Cup. Answers to Correspondents. “Russ.” Miramar: £2/7/6. “Sport.” Otaki: £l6/13/6. “Fair Go,” Lower Hutt: You. have 5/on Monanui and nothing on King Ford. Inquirers for scratching times at Thames are informed as fol’ows: —Life Guard was scratched for the Flying Handicap at 10.13 a.ra.. and Hikutaia for the Cup at 12.13 p.m., both on the day of the race.
