“Imitation of Life”
QLAUDETTE COLBERT becomes a very energetic and modern young American business woman, in her newest screen play, John M. Stahl’s production of the Fannie Hurst novel, “Imitation of Life,” at Universal City. Intensely'dramatic, the new Stahl picture will see Miss Colbert as a young mother, who, to support her tiny daughter, engages a negro “mammy” cook to assist her in a road-side refreshment stand. By sheer merit of tasty delicacies the business thrives and eventually the original stand becomes but a link in a nation-wide chain of re freshment parlours. With this success and the passing years changes in the lives of Mrs. Pulman and “Mam--my” assume importance of a widely different nature. The role of “Mammy” is played by Louise Beavers, and the supporting cast includes Warren William, Ned Sparks, Fredi Washing ton, Baby Jane, Rochelle Hudson and Alan Hale.
