BLOOMS IN PROFUSION
Karori Midsummer Show CREDIT TO EXHIBITORS Summer blooms in profusion lent a colourful atmosphere to the Parish Hall, Karori, yesterday for the midsummer show of the Karori Horticultural Society. In view of the long spell of dry weather the flowers reached a high standard of perfection, and the entries were surprisingly good. The champion bloom in the open gladioli class was won by Messrs. Griffiths and Jenkins with a “Red Lory” exhibit, and the champion bloom in the amateur class was won by Mr. A. W. Stanley with a “Chasseur” bloom. Outstanding among the exhibits were displays of gladioli by Mr G. Packman, begonias by Mr. R. H. Johnston, and pansies by Mr. W. Kent. In welcoming visitors and friends, Mr. W. M. Page, president of the society, said the long dry spell had mitigated against the perfection of blooms, but nevertheless the quality reflected great credit on the exhibitors. The aims and objects of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture were stressed by Mr. F. S. Pope, a member of the council, who declared the show open. He congratulated the district on the reputation it had gained as the garden suburb of Wellington. In no place, he said, were the gardens so plentiful and so very good. He congratulated the society on the excellence of the show, and particularly mentioned the children's section. Prize-winners are as follow: — GLADIOLI. Amateur Class. Six spikes, any variety: L. W.
