It Happened To-day. NEW ZEALAND CONSTITUTION ACT
Eighty-two years ago to day the New Zealand Constitution Act came into force. It gave the colony representative government with a General Assembly, consisting of the Governor, a Legislative Council, and House of Representatives. Legislative Councillors were to be appointed for life, and mem 4 bers of the House of Representatives to the number of not more than 42, or less than 24, were to be elected for five years, unless the Assembly was sooner dissolved. The General Assembly was to be held at any place in New Zealand that the Governor chose to select. By the same Act the two provinces (New Ulster and-New Munster) were abolished and six new provinces instituted—Auckland, New Plymouth, Wellington. Nelson, Canterbury, Otago.
