There were larger entries in the major sections at to-day’s Burnside sale. The yarding of fat cattle totalled 306 head, and comprised principally medium quality bullocks and a large percentage of cows and heifers. The sale opened with prices showing a drop of 10/- per head, and over the final races the market bad a further easing tendency. Extra prime heavy bullocks sold to £lO/17/6; prime heavy, £S 2/6 to £9/7/6; medium, £6/17/6 to £7 12/6; light, down to £5/10/-; extra prime heavy cows and heifers, to £7/17/6. A yarding of 2SO store cattle was offered, including a large entry of vealers. The latter were slow of sale, and considerably reduced prices had to be accepted. A pen of good-conditioned three and four-year-old steers changed hands at £6/5/-, while boner and cull cows sold at late rates. A medium entry of 45 dairy cows attracted more competition than has been the case for some time past, and good young cows, close to profit, sold to £6/5/-. There was an entry of 2977 fat sheep, a large proportion being freezing and medium ewes. Heavy wethers of which only a few consignments were forward, made barely last week’s higher rates. Heavy ewes firmed at the commencement, but values declined later, and over the last rates there was a drop of 1/6 to 2/per head. All light sheep' with the benefit of freezing competition were firm at late rates. Extra prime heavy’ wethers sold to 27/6; prime heavy, 24/6 to 25/9; medium, 23/- to 24/3; light, down to 19/6; extra prime heavy maiden ewes, to 24/3; extra prime heavy ewes, 19/6 to 21/6; prime heavy, 17/- to 18/9; medium, ,15/6 to 16/9; light, down to 13/-. The recent dry weather showed its effect in (he large entry of lambs, more than 900 being forward. The quality was very disappointing, vendors evidently being inclined to sacrifice quality for numbers. Export buyers operated at the increased schedule rates, and the market appreciated accordingly. Extra prime heavy lambs sold to 25/3; prime heavy.,2l/9 to 23/6; medium. 19/9 to 20/3; light, down to 17/6. In the fat pig section 163 were forward. Baconers hardly made' recent values, and porkers depreciated in value from 5/- to S/- per bead. Heavy baconers sold to £3/9/-, and" best pbrkers to £2/6/-. The yarding of store pigs numbered 112. and the quieter tone in the fat section showed its effect here, lower values ruling. Fordell Sale There was a yarding of five thousand sheep and lambs at the New Zealand Loan and Mercantile’s Fordell sale on Tuesday. Lambs comprised the bulk of the entry. They consisted of all sorts and qualities, prices ranging from 3/- for little cull lambs, to 17/3 for a line of
ewe lambs. The poorer class of lambs sold at comparatively higher values than the medium lambs. Good forward Southdown lambs made up to 16/9 for a line sold bn account of Hon. O. J. Hawken. Top prices for lambs and wethers were made by lines sent up for sale from the Marlborough Sounds: 360 wethers from the Sounds made 19/9, a splendid line of ewe lambs 17/3, and a medium line of wether Romney lambs 14/9. The sale opened at about last sale’s prices, but improved considerably, aud the strong inquiry was apparent toward the end of the sale. Taranaki buyers bought freely, especially for the smaller lambs. Prices ranged as follow: —2-tooth ewes, small, 20/5; medium, 23/5; 320 wethers from Sounds. 19/9; 146 wethers from Sounds, 17/9; 84 ewe lambs from Sounds, 17/3; 270 wethers from Sounds, 14/9 ; local lines of good Southdown lambs, 15/- to 16/9; medium S.D. lambs, 13/3 to 14/6; good Romney wether lambs, shorn, 13/3 to 15/5; medium, 10/6 to 12/9; small, 5/to 9/9; ewe lambs, good, 17/3; medium, 13/- to 14/9; small, 8/- to 11/6. Only two or three lines were passed, practically all the yarding being sold at auction. Stortford Lodge Values By Telegraph.—Press Association Hastings, January 16. With a smaller entry and with quality lines in short supply, the beef market at Stortford Lodge took a further rise, prices showing a distinct improvement on last week, this making the third successive sale at which the demand has been ahead of the supply. Bullocks, which, were few, met with very good inquiry, with cows, and heifers also selling well. Dairy-bred sorts, which were in .fair supply, also participated in the improvement. Bullocks, inedium to prime, £8 to £B/6/-; others from £6/16/-; cows, medium- to prime, £4/11)/- to £5/1/-; others from £2/5/-; heifers, medium to prime, £5/15/- to £7 ; others from £4/1/-. There wejre scarcely any store eattle offering. Fat sheep, which were in fair supply, made late rates generally, with ewes appreciating slightly, export buyers paying up to their limits. The lamb and wether offerings sold steadily, all classes in this section meeting with good local and export demand. Ewes, medium to prime,15/- to 16/3 ; others from 13/6; wethers, to 23/11; lamibs, 17/6 to 23/8. Calves were again offered in full numbers. the bulk of the yarding being plain sorts. At the beginning of the sale there was steady competition for all good calves, while rough and unfinished sorts were easier. The supply, however, was in excess of the limited demand, and the sale became very dull toward the finish. Vallies wereßunners. 25/- to 69/-: vealers, 15/- to 60/-. An average offering of sheep included very few outstanding lines. Competition was keen throughout the sale, and values for all classes remained very firm at late rates.
