REOPENING OF SPEEDWAY
Riders Practise Last Evening After a spell of two seasons, the Kilbfrhie Stadium was reopened last night for speedway practice. Between 300 and 400 interested spectators were present to see about a dozen dirt-track riders in action. These included such well-known riders as Tonks, Appleyard, Naylor and Stone, besides several newcomers. The Star performer of the evening was C. Tonka, who quickly demonstrated that he has lost none of his dash, and should regain premier place among the Wellington t&lerr, when the season commences on FebZSiar* S. Appleyard, Naylor and Stone "rfxiwed good . bursts of speed, while . a newcomer, F. Young, demonstrated that he will have to be reckoned with as the season progresses. Present plans are that the speedway season will commence on Saturday, February 2, when, in addition to the usual programme of dirt-track racing, it is proposed to introduce miniature motor-cars, which have a wheelbase of about 3ft. Gin. and are from 6ft. to 7ft. long, while the special wheels and tires are from some two feet in diameter. The engines are high-speed twin motor-cycle engines, and a front-wheel drive enables these cars to broadside on the corners.
