LONG CYCLE RIDE
Wellington to Auckland and Back LUKEY TO ATTEMPT RECORD L. G. Lukey. the well-known Christchureh professional cyclist, who broke the record for a ride from Auckland to Wellington just before Christmas, reducing the time to 30 hours, has determined now to establish a record for a ride from Wellington to Auckland and back. He will set off on his 924-miles journey from the G.1’.0.. Wellington, at 6 o’clock on Saturday night, and will pass through Ottiki. Foxton, Bulls, Wanganui, llawera. Inglewood. Waitaia. Awnkino. Te Kuiti. Te Awamutu. Hamilton, to Auckland, and will follow the same route on the return journey. He has not made any particular arrangements as to obtaining sleep on the journey, and is simply aiming to make the trip in the shortest possible time. He expects to arrive back at the G.P.0., Wellington, about 6 p.m. on Wednesday, and after checking in a number of local cyclists will join him and accompany him to the Oval at I’etone, where Lukey will finish his long ride at a sports meeting which is to be held that evening. Llikey. who is 28 years of age, has an outstaijrljng record as a cyclist. lie has been riding for 11 years, and achieved great success as an amateur. He obtained fastest time ip the Palmerston North to Wellington toad race on the three oecaslons in which lie competed. Off the scratch mark each time, he gained first place and fastest time in 192"; fifth place and fastest time in 1928; and third place and fastest time in 1929. He visited Australia as an amateur in 1925, and took part in the Warnambool to Melbourne 165-miles race, and in 1927 competed In the Colac to Melbourne 100-miles race, finishing well up in both these important events.
