Another Old Instrument
Sir, —Being the owner of a violin somewhat similar to those reported in your paper would it be -possible, for you to tell your readers the characteristics of a genuine “Strad” such as held by the late Archbishop Redwood, and also whether there is contained in such a one a label with bld lettering and figures similar to those Contained in violin® under discussion. The date in my violin has the first two figures of the date printed and the remainder in ink. 1727 is the date. Near the top portion where the strings are wound on my instrument is n projection of about half an inch, cut apparently all in the one piece of wood. I have never seen the same before, and for what purpose it is there I do not know, unless it is to act as a finger rest. The grain of wood and polish of my instrument are excellent. —I am, etc., INTERESTED.
Marton. [Some of the information sought by our correspondent is given by Mr. O’Connor in the letter following .]
