BOWLS TOURNEY

Post-Section Play For Rinks Title HOLDERS DEFEATED Three Rounds Decided . J By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland; January 16. The Dominion bowling tournament was continued to-day, when further games in the inter-section rounds of the singles and pairs championships were plaved, and post-section rounds in the full rink championship were commenced. The sensation of the day in the full rink contest was. the defeat of the present holders of the title, G. Dickson, I l ’. Itedpath, H. F. Gibson, H. Wilson, of the Linwood club, Christchurch. They won their game against M. Walker (Auckland), by 22 to 8, and were defeated by Livingstone (Onehunga). 19 to 17, and by Graham (Carlton), 23 to 13. T. Buston, Dr. P. Moir, H. C. Clarke, S. Jenkin, of the Carlton club, remain undefeated in both section and post-section rounds, winning all 11 successive games. Flay will be resumed in the pairs and singles championships as players left in are released from the elimination rounds of the rink championship. The following retain their two lives in the rink competition: Jenkin (Carlton), Robertson (Onehunga), Hosking (Pukekohe), McWhannell (Hataitai) and Whittle (Grey Lynn). The onelifers are as follow: Lancaster (Carlton), Graham (Carlton), Brighting (Hataitai), Engebretsen (Napier), Stone (St. John’s), Bremner (West End, Auckland), Arnott (Palmerston North), Mingins (Epsom), Gee (Te Awamutu), Pilkington (Hamilton), Thomas (Wairere), T. Walker (Mount Albert), Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) and Roberts (Carlton). Splendid Drawing. The post-section round of the full rink championship on the greens pf the Carlton club provided a rare series of games crammed with bowling incident of the highest character. The third round es.pecially saw a modern interpretation of the rink game staged, -with splendid drawing, a wealth of dexterous pressing shots, and much driving, when positions were built up wrongly. It was a common sight to witness bow] after bowl reach the objective indicated by the skip; it was not uncommon to see bowls scattered. This was particularly noticeable in the tussle between Livingstofie (Onehunga) and Gee (Te Awamutu). Both skips interpreted the game in the same manner, and played a full range of shots with wonderful accuracy. No fewer than five successive heads were scattered to the four corners of the green before one was satisfied with the building of . the bowls. The playing surfaces were of high excellence. One noticeable feature of the post-section rounds was the complete collapse of form in some teams which had made excellent showings in the section rounds. For instance, in the last game of the day. Mingins (Epsom) registered a score of 9 to 24 against Jenkin (Carlton). and then collapsed. There were several other similar games. Walker (Auckland) struck form, and that sterling bowler of past years was again seen in brilliant bowling against Gee (Te Awamutu). Although the Auckland team lost in the game, the character of play was very high. Both sides, from the leads to the skips, gave an excellent exhibition of the game. Te Arolia’s First Loss. R. Buchan (Te Aroba) met with the first loss in the championship nt the bands of Bremuer (West End, Auckland). The second round of the post-section rounds was remarkable for the complete collapse of some of the teams which had staged great consistency of form. Carswell (Auckland) went down 25 to 5 against Adess (St. Kilda, Dunstan). Waihi was beaten by Whittle (Grey Lynn) by 29 to 6. Engebretsen (Napier) was defeated by Robertson (Onehunga) by 21 to 9. Walker (Auckland) went down to Arnott (St. Kilda) by a big margin. Lett (Park, Masterton) was well teamed by McWhannell Hataitai). Lundon (Devonport) was beaten by a big margin by Hosking (Pukekohe). Wilson (Linwood) beat Walker 22 to S. It seemed as if the rot had set into the tournament at this sage. Most of the scores were even up to the middle of the games, and a tumble in form took place toward the closing stage. It is not often that it is quite impossible for a skip to rake a game out of the Sre when lying four down on the board. This circumstance presented itself to Suude (Glen Eden) in the game against Vella (Onehunga). Vella, who was playing number three with Wright as skip, drove the white when his team was two down to ditdh, and lay the shot in a few incnes away. Although three bowls were yet to be played, Sunde shook hands with Wright and declared a loss. Results are ae follow:— FIRST ROUND. S. Jenkiu (Carlton) 21 v. ■ Dunstau (Waihi) 8. The following were eliminated in the third round: Adess, Wilson, Newman, Loram, Vella, Short, Fraser, Lundon and Lett. , . , , Owing to players becoming released from the rinks contest, the following three games were decided in post-section play of tbe pairs competition: Logan and McCarthy (Port Ahuriri) 22 v. Johnson and McMaster (Stanley) 12. Higginson and Hosking (Grey Lynn) 19 v. Rigby and Hutchison (Dunedin) IL Casey and Lobb (West End, New Plymouth) 21 v. McConnell (Devonport) 11. CHAMPIONS IN ACTION Lyall Bay Team Defeated Dominion Special Service. Auckland, January 16. It was very hot this morning and the greens were fast when the three Wellington rinks, McWhannell (Hataitai), Brighting (Hataitai), and Brackenridge (Lyall Bay), who had qualified for postsection play in the rinks championship, commenced their games. McWhannell was drawn against Loram (Rodey Nook), and like his opponent had had six wins in section play and two losses. Brighting played Carswell (Auckland). These two rinks had also had six wins in section play. Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) met Pilkington (Hamilton). Both these rinks had had the necessary six successes to enable them to qualify. Many champions were in action to-day, but even with the fine array of talent at the Carlton green both local and visiting players would be sorry to miss Hutchison (Dunedin), for he failed to qualify, although supported by J. C. Rigby, a former Dominion singles champion, and two members of Deare’s 1931 winning rmk, Gregory and Gardiner. Spectators would have been glad to see these famous players in action again and also Norrie Bell (Hamilton), unfortunately handicapped by an accident last week. Fail to Qualify. Arthur Parsons (Ponsonby), J. Lobb (New Plymouth), W. Foster (Caledonian), and Philip Skoglund (Stratford), vzith his two sons—these all failed, to qualify, being short of one or two wins, whereas two former well-known winners, A. H. Benefield (Wanganui) and L. M. Naylor (Thorndon), were hopelessly out of it at the end of the second day’s section play. , . , Wellington rinks scored two wins and one loss in their first games to-day. McWhannell beat Loram, 19-10, Brighting beat Carswell 24-21. and Brackenridge lost to Pilkington, 14-22. A remarkab.e change of fortune favoured Pilkington, the 1925 rink champion of the Dominion, in his match against Brackenridge, a former pairs and singles champion. The latter led all the way, but Pilkington scored 1-1 points on the last four beads, and the twenty-first was not played. There was special interest in the game between Brighting and Carswell, the former Taieri champion. A large gallery watched Carswell’s original style of delivery. The game was ten-all on the tenth head. Carswell was lying the game when Brighting drew the shot with his last bowl. Holders of Title. Much interest also centred upon the present holders of the rinks title, G. Dickson, F. Redpath, 11. F. Gibson, 11. Wilson (Linwood, Christchurch). By good fortune they were drawn against H. R. Robertson (Onehunga), a rink quite capable of making the pace a cracker from the start, for everyone in Auckland knows what Livingstone and Robertson can do if they happen to be on their drive. However, not much driving was required. Livingstone got Robertson to burn two or three heads with his terrific drives, but the present champions were left to get eight for a tie on the last two heads, and this proved too big a hurdle. McWhannell Does Well. McWhannell was going strongly in bis second game, in which he beat Lett (Park, Masterton), 30-20, and still had two lives when lie met Thomas (Wairere). He won again, 23-22, having a very narrow escape, and now looks like getting very near the final. Brighting lost badly to Jenkin (Carlton), 15-26, in his second game, Jenkin then having still two lives. The Hataitai rink, however, won their third game, defeating Vella (Onehunga), 23-18, and still have one life. Brackenridge defeated the strong Dunedin rink skipped by Mackie,- 25-17. and went on to just heat Newman (Thames), 18-16. He still has one life. Following is the draw for the fourth round of post-section play in the rink competition to-morrow : —Jenkin (Carlton). a bye; Robertson (Onehunga) v. Hosking (Pukekohe) ; McWhannell (Hataitai) v. Whittle (Grey Lynn) Lancaster (Carlton) v. Graham (Carlton) ; Brighting (Hataitai) v. Engebretsen (Napier); Stone (St." Johns) v. Bremner (West End, Auckland) ; Arnott (Palmerston North) v. Mingins (Epsom) ; Gee (Te Awamutu) v. Pilkington (Hamilton) : Thomas (Wairere) v. T. Walker (Mt. Albert) : Brackenridge (Lyall Bay) v. Roberts (Carlton). Singles Gaines Continued. Meanwhile Routley (Kelburn) coutiuued his post-section play in the singles, and defeated Sunde (Glen Eden), 30-1(1. The Kelburn player was right on his game. This year a sign of returning prosperity no doubt was the fact that more visiting bowlers than usual brought their wives. Many, arrived in cars, even from the South Island, with wives and children, thus making the tournament the nucleus of a summer holiday tour. The local bowlers and their wives have provided entertainment for all, croquet for those ladies who play the game, excursions. tea parties, and evening gatherings. Altogether this year’s tournament makes it clear that at the present rate of growth the whole affair may soon become so unwieldy that it will have to b» divided or reduced in size. Even if that is done the game will not suffer—it is too deeply rooted in the Dominion’s life. PAIRS AND SINGLES More Post-Section Games By Telegraph—Press Association. Auckland, January 16. The following survive in the pairs competition in which three further post-sec-tion gomes were played to-day:—Bull and Murray (Hawera), Harris and Harris (St. Johns), Wakefield and Beer (Napier), Oughton and Loram (Rocky Nook), Logan and McCarthy (Port Ahuriri), Loveridge and Pilkington (Hamilton), Casey and Lobb (West End, New Plymouth),' Higginson and Hosking (Grey Lynn), Wellings and McWhannell (Hataitai).
