WATER POLO

Championship Matches The standard of play in this week’s water polo championship matches was of a particularly good order, and it is evident as the competitions progress the combination of the individual club teams is steadily settling down. Three noticeably improved teams in this respect are Lyall Bay A, Maranui A and Hutt A. The game between Hutt and University in the A grade, played at Riddiford Baths, was fast and interesting throughout. The teams were evenly balanced, and although Hutt won by 2 goals to 1 University lost a splendid opportunity of equalising. For Hutt H. Warburton and G. Balfour threw the goals, While R. Bradshaw was responsible for University’s score. Mr. N. N. Oldershaw was referee. The postponed A grade match between University and Wellington, played at Te Aro Baths, resulted in a comfortable win for the students by 3 goals to 1, the scorers being M. J. Mason (2), and J. Coyle. K. Spry threw Wellington’s goal. Mr. P. Coira was referee. In the B grade Lyall Bay defeated University by 5 goals to nil. The winners being the more experienced combination showed superior tactics in handling the ball and always held the advantage over the opposition. Goals for Lyall Bay were obtained by Rex (3), L. Dawkins, and J. Williams. Mr. F. Adams was the referee. Showing more combination. Maranui had little difficulty in defeating Worser Bay at Te Aro Baths, by 4 goals to 1. R. Burns (3) and A. de Costa scored Maranui’s goals, N. Jones netting for Worser Bay. Mr. V. L. Allen was referee. To-day’s Gaines. Further championship matches will be played at Te Aro Baths this afternoon at 5.30. In the A grade Wellington meet Maranui with Mr. V. L. Allen as referee. The B grade match will be between Maranui and Island Bay, Mr. W. 11. Gerrie being referee. The most important and keenly-await-ed match of the season in the A grade will be played at Te Aro Baths on Saturday afternoon as the concluding item on the programme of the Wellington centre’s carnival. SWIMMING EVENT The Y.M.C.A. Swimming Club held a .100yds. free-style handicap at Te Aro Baths last evening, resulting as follows: —W. Mori (2650 C. 1; E. Willetts (16 see.). 2; J.
