£400 PAID IN FINES
Prison For Fourth Gaming Conviction By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, January 15. In spite of the earnest pleadings of his counsel. Douglas Hipkins, aged 40, a tobacconist, was sent to jail to-day for a month for using his premises as a common gaming-house. Mr. Wyvern Wilson, S.M., said that it was the accused’s fourth conviction, ami he had already paid £4OO in fines. That being so, it would be idle and useless to impose any punishment that would not be a deterrent.
